I’m trying to envision what it might be like if I had been a budding 14-year-old horror fan sneaking into the thoroughly decent WWII-set monster film “Overlord Crack.” This high-concept historical chiller–good man American troops vs. bad man Nazi super-soldiers! –delivers as much cursing and bloodletting as its R-rating seems to promise. I hope so since that is the top “Overlord” must offer, save for a few vague ideas about the main differences between Us and Them: humankind and brutality, assimilation and occupation, yadda yadda yadda.
Overlord DLC is a simple mechanism to deliver squib packs and pronounce phrases, a function that the film’s creators accomplish despite their otherwise unremarkable story’s choppy pacing and general humorlessness. If my nephew were old enough to watch, let’s sneak into this film (he is only two years old, alas), I’d undoubtedly buy him a ticket and then disappear for two hours so that he could enjoy himself with no Uncle Creepy, I mean creepy uncle lurking over his shoulder.

Overlord Gameplay works best when Boyce–an inexperienced recruit who can’t bring himself to damage a mouse during basic training–finds a whole mess of Nazi stunt super-soldiers as he investigates the radio as mentioned earlier tower scenario. I enjoy this exploratory phase of Ray and Smith’s goofy storyline, although it is the day. Boyce not only lacks survival instincts: he doesn’t seem to be aware of when to stop unzipping leaking flesh sacks, glancing behind medical curtains, and putting things in areas where any sane (let alone combat-fatigued) soldier could say to themselves, “Hey, this is a bad idea!”

Overlord plaza Boyce’s inability to stop himself from blundering into glaringly dangerous scenarios is not merely a character-driven characteristic either. Still, instead, a sign of the way reliant Ray and Smith’s connect-the-dots plot is on aw-shucks lousy decision-making. Witness: a vital scene where Chloe pokes her head into a Nazi prison cell since, uh, she is desperate to locate Paul? Seriously?
Magaro’s Tibbet is the most potent example, popping off the screen with constant one-liners and digs at his fellow soldiers. Russell dials down the aw-shucks charm he’s shown in prior roles, somewhat echoing the world-weariness his father attested in John Carpenter’s The Item (a clear spiritual cousin to Overlord).
Ollivier demonstrates strength and resilience. Ultimately, her character is much more of a prop to create tension for many others in a few extraordinarily tired and regressive manners, instead of someone with her agency and fate. But this is Jovan Adepo’s movie, and his personality, Boyce, represents some of the most significant aspects of the film.
