A moody tale that combines the intrigue and atmosphere of a Raymond Chandler novel or Humphrey Bogart film with classic point-and-click experience drama, Face Noir Crack follows private eye, Jack Del Nero, as he’s falsely accused of murdering the man who left a tiny girl in his protection.
As Jack tries to work out the girl’s identity and clear his name, the disillusioned detective finds himself up against a city infested with corruption and financial uncertainty. The more he sees, the more he discovers, the darker depths of human character.
In his small office on Lexington Avenue, the ex-policeman and now private detective Jack Del Nero remembers his past before a bottle of whiskey. He is unaware of how the call he’s going to receive will drag him into an intricate spiral of occasions. The murder of his ex-colleague, Small Emily and the great eclipse are just a couple of elements of this tortuous path he’s got to run through in his hunt for the kitty with the jade eyes.
Rather than simple duplicated left-mouse clicking, the mouse is intended to feel like an extension of the character’s arm. So opening a doorway involves clicking, holding, and dragging the mouse off to the side to start. While it isn’t the ideal PC equivalent of touch-based mobile games, it’s a good effort to do something beyond lots of clicking, and it’s not overused.
Additionally, there are five lockpicking minigames of increasing complexity, requiring real precision and a little bit of trial and error (though finally offering the ability for wimps to skip the sequences, though I never had to). Again, hardly the harbinger of a successful new genre convention, but it’s refreshing to find a game so suspended in an old-school tradition that shows some contemporary design sensibility.
