Still, Life starts with a mythical musical crescendo. The visuals are a montage of lights, falling snow, and harsh streaks of colour splashed across a stark, sterile white canvas by some unidentified painter. The colour is vibrant against the muted tones used for the wallpapers.
A bright and relentless red. Blood red. The colour of existence… and death. The scene changes to the surreal image of a figure cloaked in black and also faceless behind a silver-embossed mask. He scampers down a dark tube pulling the body of a woman, stripped and pale in the moonlight. For this is a madman who preys on the underbelly of the city, killing individuals who no one misses and society would just as soon forget. We have a formidable villain, but do we have a hero? Indeed we do, and equally significant to this story, we also carry a heroine.
Overworked by the hard work, Victoria goes on holiday for her father’s country home, but she does not find peace there either – in the notes of her grandfather, who was employed as a detective at the beginning of the 20th century, the woman meets the mention of a criminal who acted precisely according to the same plot as and a Chicago butcher. Interested in such an exact coincidence, Victoria forgets about rest and is approved for an investigation again…
